das vorzimmer
2024

performance, proposed site-specific intervention

weimar, germany

in bureaucratic architecture, a vorzimmer is a german word for an antechamber; a room that precedes a more significant room or function; a public space that equally, if not more, echoes the authority behind it. a vorzimmer is fear and anxiety, a time-wasting machine, the rules and doctrines; an obstacle that limits accessibility.

questioning authoritative practices, an intervention on the campus of the bauhaus-universität weimar proposes the establishment of a vorzimmer as a gatekeeping agent, symbolising the mechanisms of control and restriction inherent in bureaucratic systems and societal structures. das vorzimmer serves as a metaphor for the ways in which authority seeks to delay, prevent, and hinder individual autonomy and agency.
